52nd DOK Leipzig Sets New Visitor Record
The 52nd International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film has closed with a new audience record: 34,200 visitors saw 330 productions in twelve cinemas, attended the industry events and took part in intensive discussions about the presented works as well as the future of documentary and animated film.

A wine and cheese reception will follow the presentation.

SpongeBob Documentary Gets I.O.U.S.A., Worldplay Team
Nickelodeon has inked a deal with production company O'Malley Creadon to produce the first-ever SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS documentary in celebration of the series' 10th anniversary. Acclaimed filmmaker Patrick Creadon (WORDPLAY and I.O.U.S.A) will co-produce, direct and write the documentary, along with co-producer Christine O'Malley. The one-hour original television documentary (title TBA) will chronicle the ascent of the absorbing character's journey to pop culture stardom.
Waltz Wins Doc Award
WALTZ WITH BASHIR tied for Best Feature Documentary at this weekend's International Documentary Association awards, held Friday at the Director's Guild of America in Los Angeles.
The animated WALTZ tied with MAN ON WIRE, about Philippe Petit's illegal high-wire walk between the World Trade Center towers.
WALTZ is in the running for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars and Annies, as well as the Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards for Israel. Because of qualifying run rules for documentaries, WALTZ is not an Oscar contender for the Best Documentary Feature.

Oscar Rules For Docs Magnified With Waltz
WALTZ WITH BASHIR, an animated, foreign documentary, will not be considered in the Best Documentary category at the Academy Awards this year, and it's due to a controversial change in the rules, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.
New this year, a documentary feature must have had a one-week qualifying run in New York by August 31. Previously, a doc had to be screened for one week in either Los Angeles or New York, while also playing 14 three-day bookings in at least 10 states. The Academy wants to encourage theatrical distribution, but the rules change is causing grumblings.

News Emmys Include Award For Graphic Design
Nominations for the 29th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards were announced today by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS).
The News & Documentary Emmy Awards will be presented on Monday, September 22 at a ceremony at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, located in the Time Warner Center in New York City.

SILVERDOCS Gives Mention to McLaren Doc
SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival announced its award winners, culminating the weeklong festival activities that included screening 100 films from 22 countries, free outdoor screenings and live performances, and a four-day concurrent International Documentary Conference attended by more than 500 filmmakers, film and television execs and media professionals exploring The Future of Real. Winning filmmakers received more than $42,000 in cash, goods and in-kind services.
Famous Czech Documentarist/Animator Pavel Koutecky Dies
Renowned Czech documentary filmmaker Pavel Koutecky died after falling from a high building under construction in the Prague-Pankrac neighborhood while filming is latest film, reports the public Czech Television (CT). He was 49.
The police spokesman told CT that Koutecky had been reported missing since Friday (April 14, 2006) night. Script editor Alena Muellerova said that Koutecky was shooting a documentary about a young man who climbs high buildings.
International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film
