Disney+ Greenlights Animated Fantasy ‘Journey’ from Higher Ground

From the studio behind ‘Waffles + Mochi’ and now in production, the music-driven original kids and family series follows a young heroine who ventures beyond her city’s failing energy shield and discovers magic tied to her father’s disappearance.

Journey (working title), a new original, music-driven animated fantasy series from Disney Kids & Family and Higher Ground, has been greenlit for Disney+ and is now in production.

The magical, music-filled series follows a young heroine, Journey, as the energy shield protecting her city begins to fail. After answering a mysterious call that leads her beyond the city walls and into forbidden lands, she uncovers the truth about her father’s disappearance and discovers a powerful magic within herself that may hold the key to saving her people.

The series is produced by ICON Creative Studio in association with Disney Television Animation. Matt Munn (Ice Age: Collision Course, Spies in Disguise) created the series and serves as executive producer alongside Steve Loter (Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Kim Possible). Jessie Dicovitsky, head of television at Higher Ground, will also executive produce.

Journey is an epic adventure anchored by a remarkable young heroine whose courage inspires those around her,” said Ayo Davis, president, Disney Kids & Family. “At its core, it’s a story about resilience, self-discovery and the power of believing in something bigger than yourself — the kind of universal themes that have defined Disney stories for generations.”

“Combining adventure, imagination and music, Journey is a true original that takes bold swings,” Dicovitsky said. “We’re proud to partner with Disney on this fantastical series and to build on Higher Ground’s history of delivering fun and meaningful stories for kids and families.”

Journey joins Disney Kids & Family’s animated slate for Disney+, alongside Bluey, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+, Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing Friends, Big City Greens and Phineas and Ferb. The series reflects the division’s continued focus on creating stories filled with magic, wonder, adventure and heart for a new generation of kids and families.

Higher Ground’s family franchises include Waffles + Mochi and Ada Twist, Scientist. Founded by President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, the company works across scripted and unscripted television, feature films, animated series, podcasts and digital series, and has earned three Academy Award nominations, 12 Emmy nominations and three Grammy nominations.
