Exclusive Art Reveal: Kickstarter Launches for ‘Flippitoons’ Collector Art Book

Clover Press’ 224-page deluxe hardcover from Jim Fletcher and James Martin catalogs more than 100 reversible ‘Creeepilicious Creatures’ from the Flippi-verse that transform when the book is turned right side up or upside down, with rhyming prose designed to read in either direction.

Clover Press has shared with AWN a series of exclusive page reveals to support the Kickstarter campaign launch for “Flippitoons Odditome of Deadlies and Dreadlies Volume 1,” a stunning, 224-page, 10-inch by 10-inch deluxe hardcover collector art book co-written by award-winning toy maker and comic industry veteran Jim Fletcher and writer and toy maker James Martin, with extensive illustrations by Fletcher. Who wouldn’t want to “flip your world right side up or upside down” with more than 100 “Creeepilicious Creatures!”

The book introduces readers to the Flippi-verse, a world of phenomenal creatures and inverse personalities discovered and cataloged through the dubious field of Oddibiology, or the study of odd things. In the world of “Flippitoons,” reality is flipped on its head, and each creature transforms into a scaracter of another kind when the book is turned right side up or upside down.

The main character illustrations are accompanied by lines of rhyming prose that can be read no matter which way the book is flipped. Some of the fearsome, freaky and fabulous “Flippitoons” characters will also appear in 30- to 45-second Flippimations featuring original music composed by Fletcher to reflect each creature’s personality.

“Flippitoons are creatures that I discovered one day while doodling,” Fletcher said. “One sketch mysteriously tumbled off my desk and glided to the floor, seemingly flipping over of its own accord as it fell. As I attempted to pick it up, the image kept turning over, showing me the surprise potential of its other half! I soon realized that this was no coincidence, and a multitude of Flipittoons creatures were waiting to be discovered, just beyond our reality. That was when I realized that the field of Oddibiology, or the study of odd things, was where I wanted, no, needed to be! With fellow Odddibodologist James Martin, who quickly recognized what these creatures are, this collector art book is our first attempt to catalogue the ‘Flippitoons’ (at least the ones we have captured so far) and we hope you will have a flippintastic time exploring its pages!”

Fletcher, whose middle initial is silent, has spent his career developing pop culture and entertainment collectibles. During his time with the DC Direct brand, he created lines including DC Ame-Comi Statues, DC Uniformz and DC Core; co-created DC Bombshells and DC Artist’s Alley; and led development of the long-running Batman Black and White statue series.

“When Jim first approached me, showing me these creatures he found, I thought he was flippin’crazy. Turned out I was right!” said Clover Press Publisher Hank Kanalz. “While we were at DC together, Jim created or co-created some of the most successful lines of DC Direct toys in their history, inspiring new and popular comic DC universes like DC AMI-COMI GIRLS and DC BOMBSHELLS. He’s absolutely bonkers, in the best way possible, and you’ll see that when you flip through this fantastic book of Oddibiology.”

Fletcher thrives in the pop culture and entertainment world. Tapping into his talents as a visual alchemist he conjures fantastical fancies, breathing life into the unseen, reshaping reality, and inviting others into realms where magic, myth, and creativity merge. Songs from his musical meanderings can be discovered on many streaming services. They include Mythsonix, which focuses on extended songs from “Flippitoons,” and the “Yahootees.” Martin has spent the last 25 years building toy brands and imaginative worlds and is now focused on fantasy stories filled with wonder, magic and a touch of mischief.

Fans can support “Flippitoons Odditome of Deadlies and Dreadlies Volume 1” on Kickstarter. For more updates, follow Clover Press on Blue Sky, Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube.
