The BAFTA- and Annie-winning hybrid animated short follows 3 miniature TV performers left alone in a studio after their creator’s death.
Nina Gantz’s BAFTA- and Annie-winning short film Wander to Wonder is now available on Miyu Distribution‘s YouTube channel Bang Bang, following a festival run that included 188 selections, 49 awards and an Oscar nomination.
The darkly comic 13:45 stop-motion short centers on Mary, Billybud and Fumbleton, three tiny human performers who star in an ‘80s children’s television series. After the show’s creator dies, they are left alone in the studio. With food running out, their costumes slowly decaying and fans who may no longer be watching, the trio continues producing increasingly strange episodes.
Written and directed by Gantz, a BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated Dutch animation director based in Brighton, the film stars Toby Jones as Fumbleton, Amanda Lawrence as Mary, Terence Dunn as Billybud, and Neil Salvage as the live-action presenter Uncle Gilly.

Gantz developed the project over eight years, drawing its central tension from the collision between the comforting surface of children’s television and the harsher world behind the set. “The overriding thing that kept me excited about directing it was the universe we created,” Gantz said about her film. “I loved figuring out how these miniature people would survive without their father figure to take care of them. The juxtaposition between the innocent and sweet kids TV show and the darkness of their world behind the scenes was also something that attracted me to the film.”
The filmmaker said personal bereavement reshaped the final screenplay and sharpened the characters’ different responses to grief. In the short, after losing their father figure, the performers hold onto the one activity that still gives them purpose: continuing to make their show. She approached the subject through miniature performers so the story could retain humor and lightness without minimizing its emotional center.
The film’s visual design grew from Gantz’s interest in Ray Harryhausen’s combinations of stop-motion and live-action, along with older children’s programs built around human presenters interacting with puppets. The characters were designed at an unusually small scale so they could inhabit a full-size studio and interact with real-world props while still reading as miniature adults.
The Netherlands-led co-production was produced by Stienette Bosklopper of Circe Films, Maarten Swart of Kaap Holland Film and Gantz. Co-production partners include Beast Animation, Blink Industries, Les Productions de Milou and Pictanovo. Steven Frederickx served as cinematographer; Rosie Tonkin and Eric Bésy handled production design; Joseph Comar edited; Loïc Burkhardt designed the sound; Christophe Gautry led visual effects and compositing; and Dunn composed the score. Pedri Animation created the puppets.
Wander to Wonder premiered in the Orizzonti section of the 2023 Venice International Film Festival. Its awards run included the 2025 BAFTA for British Short Animation, the Annie Award for Best Short Subject and the 2024 SXSW Animated Shorts Competition jury prize. The film was also nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards.
