Netflix has set the global streaming debut for its new feature-length anime based on the famed ‘Astro Boy’ creator’s 'Princess Knight,' directed by Yuki Igarashi with animation by Outline.
The Ribbon Hero, a new anime feature inspired by Osamu Tezuka's manga, "Princess Knight," will stream worldwide on Netflix this August. The film follows a lone hero who chooses to defy a harsh destiny.
Yuki Igarashi directs, marking his first feature-length project. He gained attention as a key animator on the ending sequence of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 and made his directorial debut with Star Wars: Visions - Lop & Ochō, which was recognized for its delicate storytelling and dynamic action.
Regarding The Ribbon Hero, Igarashi said, "For this film, I poured in my respect for Osamu Tezuka, the creator of 'Princess Knight,' for Ichizo Kobayashi of the Takarazuka Revue, which lies at the root of the work, and for the supreme, classic entertainment they brought into the world. They also created their works while overcoming hardships such as infectious diseases and war, and those works became the very foundation of our culture. To everyone living in this era, I hope you enjoy this blood-stirring, heart-pounding piece of what I believe is 'true' mainstream entertainment."
Kei Mochizuki serves as original character designer, drawing on experience from work on game titles including Fate/Grand Order and Touken Ranbu, with Mai Yoneyama contributing to character concepts following work on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and LAZARUS. Kazunari Arakaki serves as animation character designer, and Cedric Herold serves as art director.
Animation is produced by Outline, a studio led by Igarashi known for its character design work and visual style, with overall production by Twin Engine.
