The third and most likely final Official Trailer for Mattel Films and Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming romp, Masters of the Universe, has been released. LAIKA CEO Travis Knight helms legendary franchise’s return to the big screen in this epic live-action fantasy adventure… there's a new He-Man on the horizon and dare we say... it's about time! He’s got the power… and the abs to match!
In the film, 10-year-old Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) crashes to Earth and is separated from his magical Sword of Power — the only link to his home on Eternia. After being separated for 15 years, he tracks it down... and is whisked away back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish, evil rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.
The film stars Galitzine as He-Man; Leto as Skeletor; Sam C. The film had been in development at Netflix, but was dropped in 2023 for budget concerns. At that time, it was reported that $30 million had already been spent on development and actors’ fees (with some claiming twice that number). Amazon MGM Studios is the project's fourth home, with previous attachments to both Warner Bros. and Sony Pictures. Much has obviously changed - directors Adam and Aaron Nee, as well as lead Kyle Allen, left the project at some point after Netflix cut ties to the film.
Knight directs the movie from Mattel Films, Amazon MGM Studios, and Escape Artists, with a screenplay by Chris Butler - who wrote and directed both ParaNorman and Missing Link for LAIKA - and Aaron Nee & Adam Nee & Dave Callaham. The story is by Story by Aaron Nee & Adam Nee and Alex Litvak & Michael Finch. Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner, and Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner and Steve Tisch produce. Ynon Kreiz, Bill Bannerman, and David Bloomfield executive produce. Tim Burke serves as VFX supervisor; Rich Yeomans serves as VFX producer. Masters of the Universe releases exclusively in theaters on June 5 from Amazon MGM Studios and internationally from Sony Pictures International Releasing.
