The Walt Disney Animation Studios ‘Zootopia’ sequel surpasses ‘A Minecraft Movie’ with $424.2M – along with a $1.85B worldwide total - to lead the domestic box office, marking Disney’s second consecutive year at #1.
Who says cinema is dead? Zootopia 2 has become the highest-grossing domestic release of 2025, surpassing A Minecraft Movie, with $424.2 million at the domestic box office and $1.85 billion worldwide, including $1.425 billion internationally. Those are some impressive pixels.
The milestone marks the second consecutive year that The Walt Disney Studios has delivered the No. 1 domestic release. In fact, the studio also accounts for three of the top four domestic releases of 2025: Zootopia 2, Lilo & Stitch, and Avatar: Fire and Ash.
With this achievement, Zootopia 2 stands as the No. 1 domestic release of 2025; the No. 1 global and international MPA [Motion Picture Association] release of 2025; the No. 1 animated MPA film of all time globally; the No. 1 MPA release of all time in China, surpassing Avengers: Endgame; the eighth highest-grossing MPA release ever globally; Walt Disney Animation Studios’ fifth film to cross $400 million domestically; and the second highest Thanksgiving opening ever domestically, behind Moana 2.
From the Oscar-winning team of Jared Bush and Byron Howard, who direct, and producer Yvett Merino, the 3DCG comedy adventure continues the story of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. In the film, after cracking the biggest case in Zootopia’s history, Hopps and Wilde find their partnership isn’t as solid as they thought when Chief Bogo orders them to join the Partners in Crisis counseling program. Their partnership is put to the test when they find themselves on the twisting trail of a mystery tied to the arrival of a venomous snake in the animal metropolis.
The film opened to $559.5 million over its five-day global debut and became the fastest animated MPA and PG film to reach $1 billion globally, crossing the mark in 17 days. Now in its 13th week, the film has remained in the top 10 domestically for 13 consecutive weeks.
While its performance in China has been notable, the film’s success extends beyond a single territory. Even excluding China, Zootopia 2 has outgrossed the entire worldwide total of the original Zootopia.
The film has received a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and nominations from the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Critics’ Choice Awards.
The milestone brings the Zootopia franchise to nearly $3 billion globally, reflecting the continued international reach of Walt Disney Animation Studios in the theatrical marketplace.
