Rodeo FX Shares VFX Breakdown Reel for Netflix’s ‘The Abandons’

The studio delivered 113 shots across 7 episodes, including vast environments, adrenaline-charged action, and visceral fire-driven sequences that were created via a broad range of visual effects techniques.

Rodeo FX has shared with AWN and VFXWorld a VFX breakdown reel of its recent work on Netflix’s Western series The Abandons. In all, the studio crafted 113 shots, including vast environments, adrenaline-charged action, and visceral fire-driven sequences across seven episodes of the show.

As part of its work, Rodeo FX extended the environment of a sequence shot in Alberta’s Badlands with large-scale CG additions. Sculpted rock formations and finely detailed erosion work increased the sense of scale and sharpened the danger surrounding the action. The sequence tracks two riders as they attempt to outrun their attackers and ends in a jump over a massive chasm. Spanning roughly 30 shots, the work transitions from a blend of live-action plates and digital terrain to a fully CG takeover for the climax. Digital horses and riders, complete with cloth and hair simulations, carry the action through the final leap.

The series also features a catastrophic house fire that demanded a broad range of VFX techniques. A runaway cart, practical elements that varied between takes, and extensive digital replacements combined to deepen the tension and atmosphere of the sequence.

As the cart slams into the structure, intricate fire, smoke, and ember simulations bring the blaze to life. When practical flames became too intense to support continuity and storytelling, the house was rebuilt entirely in CG, allowing the team to restage and precisely control the destruction. Blue-screen elements were replaced, and multiple fully CG shots were integrated into the final edit.

The episode concludes with a fierce confrontation between Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson inside the burning building, which unfolds within a fully digital fire environment.
