Wonderstorm Announces ‘The Dragon King’ Animated Series

Set in ‘The Dragon Prince’ universe, the story will pick up 7 years after the original show, with many key characters returning as adults; supporting Kickstarter campaign will this month.

Wonderstorm, the studio behind Netflix’s multiple Emmy and Annie Award-winning series, The Dragon Prince, has announced plans for The Dragon King, a new animated series in the Dragon Prince universe.

Revealed at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con, the show will bring together voice and creative talent from three successful fandoms – The Dragon Prince, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Critical Role. The Dragon King reunites voice actors Jack De Sena and Dante Basco, the voices of Sokka and Zuko, respectively, in Avatar: The Last Airbender. De Sena will be reprising his Dragon Prince role as Prince Callum, while Basco will be dramatically expanding his role as Zym, the titular Dragon King. Joining the main cast is Liam O’Brien, a founding member of the long-running livestreamed RPG show, Critical Role, cast as a new character who is poised to disrupt the world order of Xadia.

Conceived as a standalone story, The Dragon King picks up seven years after the original series, following the return of Aaravos. Fans of The Dragon Prince will see the return of many of key characters, now advancing into adulthood, and a “no-holds-barred” payoff to the mysteries of Arcs One and Two.

“The fans have grown up with the Dragon Prince characters, so we wanted to create a more mature series that reflects that evolution,” said Aaron Ehasz, CEO and co-founder of Wonderstorm. “We’re bringing back the incredible voice work of Jack and Dante to reprise their roles, and thrilled to be adding Liam to the cast, in what we see as a creative collaboration of the talent and a coming together of three powerful fandoms.”

Wonderstorm also announced it is conducting a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to “help make the project a reality, to ensure the independent IP fully realizes the creators' vision, and to give fans a bigger role in the creation of the series.” Fans will be offered some unique opportunities behind the scenes, with more details to come when the full Kickstarter launches later this month.

The Dragon Prince enjoys the unusual privilege of being a completely independent original property, and the fans have always played an important role in driving the franchise,” commented chief creative officer and Wonderstorm co-founder Justin Richmond. “We need the community’s help to bring this new series to life and have come up with some special campaign rewards that will give fans several opportunities to help shape the project and join us on the journey.”
