Angelus Awards Student Film Festival

Begins: October 27, 2001

The Angelus Awards recognize and showcase student films of uncommon artistic caliber which explore the complexity of the human condition with creativity, compassion and respect. Festival entries are open to all undergraduate and graduate film and video students. All genres are accepted (drama. comedy, animation, documentary and narrative). Top award is $10,000. The 2001 Angelus Awards will be held at the Directors Guild of America, Los Angeles, California. This year, the festival has received a record 275 submissions (26 animations), from 88 schools in 24 U.S.

Billy West To Host 29th Annie Awards

The 29th Annual Annie Awards will take place on Saturday, November 10, 2001 at the beautifully restored Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd. in Glendale, California. Voice actor Billy West will host this year's black-tie event. The festivities begin at 5:00 pm with a champagne reception in the theatre's courtyard. The awards ceremony follows at 7:00 pm.

Nominees For The Gemini Awards Announced

The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television announced the nominees for the 16th Annual Gemini Awards, celebrating excellence in Canadian English-language television. The nominees for Best Animated Program or Feature are: ANGELA ANACONDA, CAILLOU II, CHILDREN OF CHELM, FRANKLIN, OLLIE'S UNDER THE BED ADVENTURES and YVON OF THE YUKON. The nominees for Best Visual Effects are: GENE RODDENBERRY'S ANDROMEDA, NUREMBERG PART 1, STARGATE SG-1 and THE OUTER LIMITS.

Golden Marble Awards 2-Day Event Shattered By WTC Tragedy

The luncheon awards ceremony for the 4th Annual Golden Marble awards was scheduled to take place on September 11, 2001 but was understandably cancelled due to the terrorist attacks that occurred that morning on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Although the ceremony was cancelled, the awards celebrating excellence in children's advertising were handed out. Leo Burnett was the big winner, taking home a total of seven awards, including one Golden Marble and six certificates of excellence for spots for Nike, Heinz and Nintendo.

The 4th Annual Golden Marble Awards

Begins: September 11, 2001

The 4th Annual Golden Marble Awards celebrates excellence in children's advertising. Launched in 1998, the show was founded by KidScreen magazine in partnership with seven leading industry ad agencies: Foote, Cone & Belding; Grey Advertising; Griffin Bacal; J. Walter Thompson; Leo Burnett; Ogilvy & Mather; Saatchi & Saatchi; Young & Rubicam; and YTV Canada Inc. 2001 sponsors include: Boards Magazine, Nelvana Enterprises and YTV. A team of judges will judge entries in 32 categories. In conjunction with the awards there will be the Advertising & Promoting to Kids conference.

Topix Toons In For Golden Marble Awards

TOPIX, a character animation, special effects, film titling, type and broadcast design firm, has designed and produced the animation and special effects for the 4th Annual Golden Marble Advertising Awards and the 3rd Annual Golden Marble Promotion Awards. "For the 4th Annual Golden Marble Advertising Awards our job was to give the show a distinctive look and to create a 5-second identity for each of the 32 Golden Marble Advertising Awards. We catered to the playfulness of children's advertising, but the work had to play to an audience which is a really sophisticated, savvy bunch of ad execs.

The 15th Annual Wine Country Film Festival highlights outstanding work in features, shorts, documentaries, animation and graduate and student films. Awards include Best First Feature (Domestic and International), Best Short in various categories, David L. Wolper Documentary Film Prizes and Audience Choice Awards. The entry fee is US$35.

Powerpuff Girls Packs A Powerful Punch With Three Awards At LIMA

POWERPUFF GIRLS captured three awards, including overall License of the Year, at the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers Association (LIMA) Annual Awards Gala, recognizing the brightest in the multi-billion dollar worldwide licensing industry in 2000. POWERPUFF GIRLS also captured two awards in the Entertainment/Character category, including License of the Year and Licensee of the Year/Soft Goods, for POWERPUFF GIRLS Apparel. Kelloggs is marketing a POWERPUFF GIRLS breakfast cereal and Delta Airlines has the characters decorating the tailfins of its planes.

REZN8 Does Own Stunts For Awards Telecast

Hollywoods REZN8, a leading digital design company, has produced the graphics and animation package for the first annual World Stunt Awards telecast. Working with the Taurus World Stunt Awards Foundation, REZN8 was responsible for the design, production and animation of the computer-generated opening sequence and transition segments for the event. The opening sequence for the telecast began with a shimmering star that releases the Taurus and returns it to Earth cast as a gleaming golden statuette.

LIMA Licensing Awards

Begins: June 13, 2001

LIMA, the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers' Association, is holding their annual awards gala. The event will hand out honors to those who impacted the world of licensing in the past year. Some of the awards include License of the Year, Merit Award for Licensing Creativity and Best Brand. During the ceremony, they will induct a new member into the Murray Altchuler Licensing Hall of Fame. Cocktails will begin being served at 6:30 pm with the awards presentation starting at 7:15 pm.

55th Annual Reuben Awards

Begins: May 26, 2001

Presented by the National Cartoonists Society, the 55th Annual Reuben Awards will happen in Boca Raton, the home of the International Museum of Cartoon Art. The three-day event will climax with the presentation of the Reuben Award to the outstanding cartoonist of the year, on Saturday night at a black-tie dinner. Past Reuben winners include Scott Adams, Gary Larson, Charles Schulz and many more. This years nominees are: Pat Brady (ROSE IS ROSE), Jack Davis (MAD Magazine) and Matt Groening (THE SIMPSONS).

Animation Celebration At WorldFest Houston Festival

The 34th annual WorldFest, The Houston International Film Festival, concluded on April 28, 2001. This year, the festival received more than 4,300 total entries, with all animation categories receiving over 30 entries each. Ray Pointer, president of Inkwell Images, Inc., received the Gold Award in the entertainment category for his documentary, MAX FLEISCHER'S FAMOUS OUT OF THE INKWELL. This is Pointer's third win in a row, having won the Gold, Silver and Bronze awards for producing the successful KEN SOUTHWORTH ANIMATION INSTRUCTION series.

2001 Harvey Award Winners Announced

The 2001 Harvey Awards were presented April 27, 2001 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Named for the late comic genius Harvey Kurtzman, the Harveys are one of the comics industry's oldest and most prestigious awards. They are the only awards in comics both nominated and selected by the vote of the full body of creative comics professionals. Three Harvey Awards were bestowed upon Chris Ware, including Best Series and Best Graphic Album of Previously Published Work for ACME NOVELTY LIBRARY, and the Special Award for Excellence in Presentation for Pantheon's Acme collection, JIMMY CORRIGAN.

Named after the late comics genius Harvey Kurtzman, the Harvey Awards honor outstanding work in comics and sequential art. Harvey Kurtzman (1924-1993) was a cartoonist, writer, editor and the founder of MAD Magazine. Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by comics creators -- those who write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit or are otherwise involved in a creative process. The awards have 20 categories, ranging from Best New Talent to Best Cartoonist.
