ASWF has added the open source path guiding library, originally developed by Intel, to its growing portfolio of production-focused tools; goal is to advance realistic lighting workflows while maintaining high rendering performance.
The Academy Software Foundation has welcomed OpenPGL, short for Open Path Guiding Library, as its newest hosted project, expanding its portfolio of open source tools designed to support production-ready workflows in the motion picture industry.
Originally developed by Intel, OpenPGL enables artists and developers to achieve more realistic lighting when building and designing scenes and animations while maintaining equal or improved rendering performance and preserving artistic flexibility.
Path guiding is a sampling strategy that improves rendering efficiency by incorporating information about a scene’s light distribution, such as directions, distances, and scattering decisions, into the importance sampling process. While academic research in this area is extensive, integrating such methods into production systems has traditionally been complex. OpenPGL addresses this by offering a production-ready, open source library that allows developers to integrate state-of-the-art path guiding methods into professional and scientific renderers.
The library is designed for integration into any path tracing-based renderer for both interactive and final-frame rendering. Its API separates the integration process from the underlying guiding structures and training algorithms, allowing developers to adopt advanced path guiding techniques that have been tested across a wide range of production lighting scenarios.
OpenPGL has already been adopted and integrated into leading renderers, including Blender’s Cycles, Chaos’ V-Ray, SideFX’s Karma, and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Hyperion, among others, reflecting its growing role in production rendering pipelines.
"As an ASWF project, the professional rendering community will have the opportunity to participate in OpenPGL’s future development and push the limits of rendering even further," said Sebastian Herholz, OpenPGL Maintainer and Senior Developer and Researcher at Blender. "In addition, it will provide rendering researchers with a platform to experiment with new path guiding ideas and lower the barriers to test them in production contexts."
Studios including Walt Disney Animation Studios and Illumination Studios Paris, as well as Chaos, have noted production use of OpenPGL, citing its ability to handle complex lighting scenarios, improve efficiency, and reduce the need for manual workarounds. The technology was applied to challenging lighting and volumetric scenarios in productions such as Zootopia 2 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
OpenPGL will begin as a sandbox project within the Academy Software Foundation, the earliest stage for new initiatives, providing structure and resources for continued development with the goal of advancing to incubation within one year. Ongoing development will be overseen by a Technical Steering Committee led by Sebastian Herholz.
