The company shares details on how its ProVis tools enhanced real-time visualization and production workflows on new season of the Seth MacFarlane comedy, enabling complex sequences blending live-action and digital elements to be executed in-camera.
Fuzzy Door Tech has shared details of its expanded use of its ViewScreen real-time production visualization (ProVis) tools on Season 2 of Ted, Seth MacFarlane’s raucous live-action comedy that returned to Peacock on March 5. In the new season of the live-action / CGI hybrid series, set prior to the events in the Ted films, it’s 1994, and senior year of high school is underway for Ted the foul-mouthed teddy bear and his best friend, likable but awkward John Bennett. Of course, as always, Ted may be a lousy influence on John, but at the end of the day, he’s a loyal pal who’s always willing to go out on a limb for friendship. Or something like that.
The company’s system builds on the successful first season, which marked the first television production to film an animated lead character in real-time alongside live actors. Season 2 extended these capabilities to more complex sequences, combining live actors, digital environments, and effects in real-time. The technology was used extensively in a Dungeons and Dragons-inspired episode to support visualization and animation directly on set.
“ViewScreen enables you to visualize anything digital in real-time while filming. For Season 2, we expanded how our technology was used on set,” said Faith Sedlin, president of Fuzzy Door Tech. “In pre-production, ViewScreen allowed the team to visualize the vast forest on an iPad, informing set layout and shot design. In production, ViewScreen let Seth MacFarlane and the rest of the crew see Ted in-camera and visualize sets and environments like the collapsing ceiling and expansive forest in ‘Dungeons & Dealers,’ Episode 3.”
“Dungeons & Dealers” required actors to perform within a temple setting enhanced by digital effects, including a descending ceiling and spikes threatening to crush them. While parts of the set were built physically, the dangerous elements were created digitally and visualized live on set using ViewScreen.
The system allowed MacFarlane, the camera operators, and actors to evaluate blocking, camera movement, and comedic timing in real-time rather than waiting months for post-production. This provided immediate creative feedback and improved production efficiency.
ViewScreen is part of Fuzzy Door Tech, the technology division of Seth MacFarlane’s production company Fuzzy Door, established in 2019. The suite of ProVis tools enables simultaneous integration of CGI characters and virtual environments with live-action footage during filming, supporting workflows from pre-production through post. ViewScreen accelerates workflows by delivering in-camera visualization, real-time VFX integration, and immediate creative feedback. The technology has been used on Season 1 and Season 2 of Ted as well as other major TV shows and feature films to visualize complex digital elements in real-time.
